A partial lunar eclipse is expected to take place over the night sky on Thursday.
Thursday night, the full Sturgeon Moon is set to slip into Earth’s shadow, creating a stunning “almost blood moon” as up to 96.2% of the lunar surface disappears into the darkest part of our planet’s shadow, the umbra, according to officials with space.com
The partial lunar eclipse favors observers across North and South America. About 12% of the world’s population are expected to be able to see all phases of the eclipse, according to Time and Date, weather permitting.
Residents who can’t see the lunar eclipse can watch free live streams here.
A partial lunar eclipse happens when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon, but the three bodies are not perfectly aligned. As a result, only part of the Moon enters Earth’s darkest shadow, called the umbra.
This differs from a total lunar eclipse, where the entire Moon enters Earth’s umbra and can turn reddish—the famous “blood moon.”
Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is completely safe to look at with your eyes; no special glasses are needed.
Officials with Space.com say this is the last partial lunar eclipse until New Year’s Eve of 2028.
