Santa Clarita Big Lots One Of Several To Close

The Big Lots in Santa Clarita is one of several locations that are expected to close due to quarterly losses.

In June, the company reported a net loss of $205.0 million for the first quarter of their fiscal year which ended May 4, 2024, FOXLA reported.

Net sales for the first quarter of fiscal 2024 totaled $1.009 billion, a 10.2 percent decrease compared to $1.124 billion for the same period last year, according to the company.

“While we made substantial progress on improving our business operations in Q1, we missed our sales goals due largely to a continued pullback in consumer spending by our core customers, particularly in high ticket discretionary items. We remain focused on managing through the current economic cycle by controlling the controllables. As we move forward, we’re taking aggressive actions to drive positive comp sales growth in the latter part of the year and into 2025, and to maintain year-over-year gross margin rate improvements, all driven by progress on our five key actions,” President and CEO of Big Lots Bruce Thorn said in June.

Due to the losses, several Big Lots locations are expected to close their doors.

One of the Big Lots listed to close is located on Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country.

An exact date for when the Santa Clarita location will be closing was not released.

Big Lots is not the only store that has decided to close locations in the Santa Clarita Valley over the last year.

In July, Bulldog Liquidators, a locally-owned surplus store, announced it would be blosing by September.

About Carl Goldman

Carl Goldman, along with his wife, Jeri repurchased KHTS AM-1220, Santa Clarita’s hometown station on October 24, 2003. They owned it from 1990-1998, and then sold it to Clear Channel Communication in 1998, buying it back from Clear Channel in 2003. Since then, they have rebuilt KHTS as a critical voice of the Valley. In 2015 the radio station moved to its new headquarters on Main Street in Old Town Newhall, in the original Newhall Hardware building. In 2018 an FM was added, 98.1, with its signal being simulcast with AM-1220. In January 2020, Carl and Jeri cruised on the Diamond Princess. Carl was one of the first Americans to come down with Covid-19. Months earlier he was impacted by Guillain Barre Syndrome as a result of a Shingles vaccine in September 2019. He is still in recovery from the vaccine.
