Santa Clarita Ranked The 20th Fastest-Growing City In America

The City of Santa Clarita was ranked the 20th fastest-growing city throughout the United States, officials said Thursday.

Santa Clarita was named the 20th fastest-growing out of 515 cities in the 2019 study, the second fastest-growing in California, according to WalletHub, a personal finance website.

This study was also conducted last year with Santa Clarita ranking No. 23, according to officials.

“We have a reputation for being a family-friendly community and we want to make it remain that way,” said Mayor Marsha McLean.

WalletHub compared the varying population for hundreds of cities by using 17 key data points, such as working-age population growth, job growth, poverty rate decrease, median house price growth and building permit activity growth.

Although living in a growing city and having to deal with crowded roads and stores can be a burden to some residents, officials say that there is a positive side to seeing one’s hometown expanding.

“Growing cities generally means the economy and employment rate is booming, and that can do wonders to woo a younger crowd of new residents who may very well breathe fresh life and energy into the nightlife and dining scene,” according to a statement released by WalletHub in a previous story.

Within the last year, Santa Clarita has seen a number of infrastructure projects come about, from road improvements, to the installation of new pedestrian bridges, to construction of the new Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and the completion of the new Santa Clarita Senior Center, known as Bella Vida.

However, opposition to new housing development projects has become a pressing issue for local leaders and residents alike, according to officials

A number of housing projects have either been completed or approved in recent years, with the largest development being the Newhall Ranch Project.

That housing project is expected to include 21,500 units of mixed housing and commercial units along a six-mile stretch of Highway 126 west of the 5 Freeway in Valencia just outside of City limits.

Santa Clarita’s population is projected to reach 450,000 people within 15 years — an increase of 150,000 from today, according to state estimates.

“We may be one of the fastest-growing cities, but we are quality growing,” McLean said.

  1. Egads. When will this burg be big enough?

“Nobody likes that place, it’s too popular.”

  2. One new connecting road every 10 years. Yeah, that should take care of the traffic. It should be against the law to build another residence until the infrastructure is in place to support it. 55 minutes from Shadow Pines to Valencia this morning. I know that it is Palmdale traffic that causes the problem but still only one road over here.

  3. Wow! Because they keep building house on top of house and in the mountains and hill and then everyone wonders why the Bob cats, Coyotes, snakes, Bears and other wildlife are in town, because their habitat is being ruined.
Oh not to mention the traffic 🙁
    So sad!!

    • Don’t drink the water in SCV!! Perchlorate found in well right behind Bridgeport and was shut down recently…

For more than 40 years, perchlorate was used as a solid fuel component in the manufacture of munitions, fireworks, flares and other explosives at the Whittaker-Bermite site located south of Soledad Canyon Parkway, and east of San Fernando Road.

As a result of all those operations, a known perchlorate contaminant plume was identified in the SCV and several wells have tested positive for perchlorate. Improperly disposed-of waste leaked into the groundwater and contaminated the wells.

In addition to groundwater remediation efforts, there has been an ongoing cleanup effort underway on the Whittaker-Bermite property under the jurisdiction of the state’s Division of Toxic Substances Control.

  4. The career politicians are the problem with Santa Clarita. Clean house and elect some clear thinking officials B4 it takes 2 hours to travel from Sand Canyon to Stevenson Ranch.

  5. Low-income housing for the working poor and those struggling not to be the working poor? They used to be called the “lower economic” class..

  6. This is not a good thing, this city cannot handle the people it has now and they are not doing anything to fix the problem.

  7. What made Saugus , Newhall C/C & Valencia nice was all the Mom & Pop stores . Corporate nonsense has taken over and forced most Mom & Pop places out. So what was the end result?? Our town having the same stores and same Resturants as every other town over the hill as well as the traffic. So what makes this place special anymore??? Your mowing down all of our beautiful hills, relocating those beautful Oak trees and just building building building at a reckless rate to which our own Law Enforcement states they cant control a town of this size. Some people are fooled by new buildings with fresh paint jobs but the rest of us that moved from the valley 40+ years ago can see the warning signs. SCV has turned into what we were all against. Peace and quiet are out and now its traffic, sirens at all hours, crime is up as well as drugs. If you are new to our valley (lived out here 15 yrs or less) I dont expect you to understand. Not saying you dont matter. I’m just saying its not what it used to be. Not even close.

  8. This article is 100% FAKE.

Look at the population stats for Santa Clarita in the last 10 years.
10 years ago the population was 204,000 today it is 210,000. Only 6 thousand more.

The line “woo a younger crowd of new residents” is laughable.
Super high property rates, and overcrowding have led to many young people leaving California.
They cannot afford to live here. I can only guess that the Newhall Ranch Development will have $700K houses crammed in with no parking on the streets. There will be plenty of fast food and Starbucks, so people can make minimum wages. Hey, can you live in a $700K house making minimum wage?

  9. Newhall Land was always going to develop the land. Unfortunately. I kept asking the water company “how can there be a moritorium on water usage because of the drought when 21,000+ homes are going in?” They said it was already approved 20 years ago. But yet our rates kept going up. I even heard they are going to make our carpool lane on the 5 fwy, that we already paid for and hasn’t been finished yet, a toll road! We need infrastructure badly.

  10. Wealthy Korean & Syrian businessmen buy these gas stations, liquor stores, dry cleaners, etc. and get young immigrants on a work visa, have them work at slave wages and long horrible hours in the enticement of getting a green card! That makes it impossible for mom & pops and young families to buy & compete in a start up business!! On top of that, these wealthy immigrants get low interest taxpayers paid government loans to wipe out the chances for Americans to start up businesses! Not moral/fair!!

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
