Santa Clarita Transit Launches ‘On-Demand’ Service For Fair Oaks, Canyon Country

Santa Clarita Transit announced Monday a new “on-demand” service for the east side of the valley, officials said.

Beginning Monday, March 2, residents within the Fair Oaks and Canyon Country areas are set to have a new transportation service available to them called “Go! Santa Clarita,” according to City of Santa Clarita officials.

The grant-funded program will provide curb-to-curb transportation within a designated service area, as well as to key destinations in the city, including the College of the Canyons Canyon Country Campus, Santa Clarita Child & Family Center, Via Princessa Metrolink station, Santa Clarita Sports Complex and Walmart location on Carl Boyer Drive.

GO! Santa Clarita is an app-based public transit service similar to Uber or Lyft and is open to the general public, according to City officials.

Users can download the MV Passenger app for iOS or Android devices and with a few simple clicks, request a ride from GO! Santa Clarita.

The initial service area provides access to neighborhoods that have a high demand for transit, as well as areas that are currently not served by traditional fixed-route buses.

Residents can use GO! Santa Clarita to connect to local stores and amenities, as well as to other transportation options, such as Santa Clarita Transit buses or Metrolink’s Antelope Valley Line for longer trips.

“We’re extremely excited to offer this new service,” said Administrative Analyst Alex Porlier. “By leveraging technology, we’re able to put a modern spin on transit in Santa Clarita and make our services even more accessible.”

GO! Santa Clarita is set to operate for free during the month of March, after which time the regular fare will be $2 per trip or $1 for reduced-fare patrons.

  1. Sounds like the “Sierra Shuffle”.

    What’s not clear – how does one get back if they are taken to Walmart – since that’s out of the service area?

    Also, for those who are not commuters – the time window to go shopping/appointments is rather late in the day to use the service in the afternoon/evening.

    I understand this a demonstration project – but did the city need to spend more money on extra paint and decals of a small bus that may not be around after a month?

    Traditionally – the City of Santa Clarita has been conservative when painting vehicles – with a very simple city seal of the city on the side of the vehicle – or inexpensive decals on the city transit bus fleet.

    No need to waste taxpayers money on fancy pants paint schemes – save the money for a rainy day!

    Going forward – I can forsee the City of Santa Clarita deploying these mini-bus type services throughout the city and unincorporated areas where ridership is very low – and does not warrant a 40 foot coach.
    The point of expanding service to undeserved/non-served areas that are too distant from current bus routes – while improving transit services throughout the City of Santa Clarita and the unincorporated areas.

    Some routes during the mid-day and late evening could be used as a parallel to the Dial-A-Ride service which many are not aware of is open to the general public after 6 p.m. – but does require an advance reservation.

    I have always been on the side that the City of Santa Clarita has one of the best local transit programs in the United States. It just may be time to re-examine the fleet to better rationalize the size of coach used on certain routes and areas to maximize the use of limited funds – and expand service without increasing costs – quite a challenge indeed!

    The airlines have been using this approach for decades – redeploying aircraft and using smaller jets on thinner routes and/or using larger jets when demand increases.
