Santa Clarita Youth Baseball Team Receives $1,000 From Kathryn Barger

After earning a spot in a national tournament, the Santa Clarita Youth Baseball Black Sox received a $1,000 donation from Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger to help get the team there.

A few weeks ago, the Santa Clarita Youth Baseball Black Sox “shocked everyone” when they won second place in the Cal Ripken State playoffs, earning a birth in the Cal Ripken Southwest Regional in Vernal, Utah, according to officials.

“Somehow our boys came together and shocked everyone by getting second place,” said Jeff Nuttall, team manager for the Black Sox, in a previous story. “The excitement they felt was unbelievable.”

However, when the team earned their spot in the tournament, the parents and staff realized that they did not have enough funds to get the team to Utah, with less than two weeks until the tournament began.

“We have to be there Sunday morning for check-in,” said Lisa Nuttall, Jeff’s wife and the team’s hospitality coordinator. “Our first game is Monday afternoon.”

In an effort to raise the funds needed for the trip, parents from the team put together a Facebook fundraiser so that the community could help the Black Sox get to Utah.

After hearing about the team’s efforts, Barger reached out to Jeff through her Santa Clarita Valley Senior Deputy, Stephanie English.

“Supervisor Barger would like to donate $1,000,” English wrote to Jeff on July 3. “Congrats on your successes with the kids!”

With Barger’s donation, along with the funds raised by the Facebook fundraiser, the team had raised over $2,600 as of Saturday afternoon, according to Lisa.

“We appreciate everybody’s support,” Lisa said. “It’s a cool opportunity for the boys. They’re the greatest kids I know, and they deserve it.”

To help make another push for funding, the Black Sox are set to host a fundraiser at Toppers Pizza Place in Valencia on Tuesday.

“Twenty percent of the money goes back to the team,” Lisa said.

The fundraiser is from 3:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the players of the Black Sox are set to be there as well.

Residents can also livestream the team’s first game here on Monday, July 15, at 10:30 a.m. PST.
