SCV Water Releases Plan To Maintain Service During Power Outages

In the wake of recent wildfires, Santa Clarita Valley Water (SCV Water) released an overview of their plan to continue providing water during power outages, officials said.

“With the extreme weather we’ve experienced lately – Red Flag wind warnings, extremely low humidity and massive wildfires – residents and businesses may be wondering about water supplies during a power outage,” SCV Water officials said. “Rest assured, SCV Water has an operational plan in place in the event of an emergency”

The agency’s plan includes preemptively deploying large generators to any facilities that may be affected by power outages, having on-call staff available after regular business hours and keeping their tank levels high during Red Flag Warnings, officials said.

The agency uses an electronic monitoring system to track the levels of its tanks in order to maintain the desired level during high fire-risk weather. The generators they’re prepared to mobilize can keep their facilities running for 12 hours without needing to be refueled.

Additionally, The Rio Vista Water Treatment Plant has back-up power and can continue to operate for four to five days without power, according to officials.

The plan was released to address concerns from community members about the availability of water during possible prolonged power outages, officials said.

“SCV Water staff have spent countless hours to develop and fine-tune an operations plan that can prepare us for short- and long-term emergencies,” said SCV Water Board President Bill Cooper in a statement. “It’s reassuring to know preparedness is a high priority, and one we can better manage now as a single, regional water provider.”

  1. They need to put solar in to run the water level measuring systems. But this only measures the water level. If the shutoff lasts for a long time over a large area, they will have trouble re-filling the big tanks on the hills. This is a huge issue.
