Snapchat, Fortnite, And More Go Dark After Amazon Outage

Early Monday morning, a problem with Amazon Web Services (AWS) caused major internet disruptions, knocking out some of the world’s most popular apps including Snapchat, Roblox and Fortnite.

The issues were reported just after 3 a.m. Eastern, when AWS reported that it was investigating problems in one of its main regions.

Within minutes, the outage spread, and people around the world found themselves unable to use everyday apps, according to DownDetector.

Users flagged problems with social media, games, finance platforms, and even food apps like McDonald’s. Coinbase and Signal confirmed on X that they were impacted.

People also reported having trouble with Alexa devices, Ring doorbell cameras, Kindle downloads, and even the company’s own shopping site.

AWS engineers eventually traced the issue to problems with its domain name system – which turns web addresses into the numbers that computers use to connect. Without it, websites and apps can’t load.

By around 6 a.m. Eastern, Amazon said most services were starting to recover, though some users continued to see issues.

In total, 64 internal AWS services were affected.

Amazon says engineers are still working on a “full resolution,” but many of the affected apps appear to be back online.
