Today In SCV History: Mint Canyon School District Is Founded

On this day, Feb. 12, 1879, Mint Canyon School District was founded, which decades later was merged into the Sulphur Springs Union School District.

The original Mint Canyon School of the aforementioned district burnt down in 1947, leading to students attending the nearby Sulphur Springs School while Mint Canyon was rebuilt.

The modern-day Sulphur Springs Union School District was formed in 1944 when the original Sulphur Springs School District, founded in 1872, and the Mint Canyon District merged.

The new Mint Canyon school was not reopened until Sept. 10, 1963, more than 16 years later.

The new school site was honored with a sign to commemorate the founding of the school district. Located near the highway, it was donated by the student body of 1968.

The sign was then presented to then-Superintendent Dr. Ralph Bell of the Sulphur Springs Union School District.

This union of school districts was a significant step toward distinguishing the educational system in the Santa Clarita Valley.

As of today, the Sulphur Springs Union School District educates most of Canyon Country from kindergarten through 6th grade.
