Today In SCV History: March 7, 1976 – Groundbreaking For New First Presbyterian Church Of Newhall

On this day, the community of Newhall witnessed a historic moment as the groundbreaking ceremony for the new First Presbyterian Church took place.

This milestone comes in the wake of the devastating 1971 earthquake, which heavily damaged the previous church structure, necessitating its replacement.

The history of the Newhall Presbyterian Community Church dates back to the very beginnings of Newhall itself.

Established in 1877 as a Sunday School through missionary efforts, it grew as both Presbyterian and Methodist missionaries served families at the San Francisco Ranch—now known as Newhall.

The early congregation gathered in various locations, including the Southern Hotel, private homes, and the local school, before formally organizing as the Community Presbyterian Church on May 31, 1891, under the leadership of Rev. F.D. Seward and 16 charter members.

By June 28, 1891, the Articles of Incorporation were signed, and with generous support, including a $1,400 donation from the Presbyterian Church “Erection Board,” construction of the first church building commenced.

Built by C.S. Hogan for $1,225, the church was completed and accepted on Sept. 15, 1891. The church site, donated primarily by the Newhall Land and Farming Company, reflected a New England tradition of including both a church and a cemetery on the same grounds.

Over the years, the church flourished, guided by dedicated leadership. In 1968, Rev. Robert Bingham was installed as pastor, bringing a renewed vision to the congregation.

Under his leadership, three major goals were set: building a new church, expanding youth programs, and increasing leadership in mission work.

The catastrophic earthquake of Feb. 9, 1971, accelerated the urgency of the first goal, leading to today’s groundbreaking for a new sanctuary.

Beyond the walls of the church, Rev. Bingham’s impact has been felt throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. His involvement in organizations such as the Newhall Rotary Club and the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Board of Directors has strengthened the community. Additionally, under his leadership, the church’s mission giving grew significantly, reflecting the congregation’s unwavering commitment to service.

Today’s groundbreaking marks not only a new beginning for the First Presbyterian Church of Newhall but also a testament to the resilience and faith of its members.

For over a century, this church has stood as a beacon of hope and fellowship, and it is poised to continue its legacy for generations to come.
