On this day in 1952, the Henry Mayo Newhall Auditorium, better known to generations of Santa Clarita residents as the Hart Auditorium, opened its doors at William S. Hart High School in Newhall.
The 600-seat auditorium was the cultural centerpiece of the Santa Clarita Valley for decades, hosting school productions, community events, and countless concerts and ceremonies.
A real photo postcard from the 1950s shows the building soon after its completion, standing as a symbol of the valley’s growth in the postwar years.
The auditorium’s history is tied to the founding of the school itself. In 1945, five local elementary districts — Newhall, Saugus, Castaic, Mint Canyon and Sulphur Springs — petitioned the California State Board of Education to form the Santa Clarita Union High School District.
Voters approved the decision with overwhelming support, passing a $300,000 bond measure to construct the valley’s first high school on a 27-acre site in Newhall, with 20 acres donated by the community.
“On March 9 they (SCV residents) elected its first five-member board, and on June 2 they voted 432-2 to pass a $300,000 bond measure to build the valley’s first high school on a 27-acre parcel in Newhall, 20 acres of which had been donated to the new school district,” according to SCV History.
While historian A.B. Perkins originally suggested “Santa Clarita” as the school’s name, the passing of local benefactor and silent film cowboy star William S. Hart just months before the school opened in 1946 led to it being named in his honor.
The auditorium stood strong for more than 40 years before closing after the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
Following a six-year renovation effort, the Hart High School Auditorium reopened in 2000, restored as both a school and community landmark.
