4,825 Additional L.A. County Coronavirus Cases Confirmed, Backlog In Cases Reported

4,825 additional coronavirus cases in Los Angeles County confirmed on Wednesday, with a backlog in case reporting still occurring in the County, officials said.

The L.A. County total of cumulative coronavirus cases now stands at 183,383 as of Wednesday, according to Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH).

Over 2,000 of the cases reported Wednesday are from a backlog from last week, according to Ferrer.

Los Angeles County Supervisor, Hilda Solis noted that the “epicenter” of the COVID-19 pandemic in L.A. County was centered around East L.A. and other low income communities, as evidence of the economic disparity that has affected infection and death rates throughout the County.

“We aren’t recovering as a community unless everyone is able to have a good outcome as you see each week our black and brown neighbors and those in our low-income communities are bearing the brunt of this virus both in terms of infections and deaths in our recovery,” said Ferrer. “Our journey won’t be complete until every single person in our community can be healthy, protected and able to do their job as safely as possible.”

There are more than 2,045 people currently hospitalized as of Wednesday due to COVID-19 throughout L.A. County, Ferrer said.

28 percent of those currently hospitalized are in the intensive care unit (ICU), according to Ferrer, and 17 percent are on ventilators.

Testing results are available for over 1,600,000 individuals as of Wednesday, with 10 percent of all people testing positive, according to public health officials.

91 additional deaths have been reported Wednesday, for a total of 4,516 people who have died due to coronavirus in Los Angeles County. This is the highest one day count of deaths in Los Angeles County, however this is partially due to the state lab backlog.

“To those grieving the loss of a person you love, I send my heartfelt condolences,” said Ferrer.

92 percent of all COVID-19 deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to public health, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.

Additionally, 40 cases have been confirmed in nearby Acton as well as 17 in Agua Dulce.

Public health officials are not releasing recovery numbers by city, according to the department.

As of Wednesday, July 29, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has conducted 5,276 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 651 have tested positive, and 217 tests are still pending with Henry Mayo, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.

There are 31 patients in the hospital as of Wednesday, while 176 patients have been discharged since the hospital’s first case was reported in March, according to Moody.

A majority of all deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to public health, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.
