A COVID-19 case has been confirmed by the William S. Hart Union School District, with details unable to be released, officials said Tuesday.
Due to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Hart District is not able to provide if the case was a student or staff member, according to Dave Caldwell, spokesperson for the district.
“We are following all protocols, procedures and safety measures established by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health,” said Caldwell in a statement.
As of Tuesday, Hart District officials cannot confirm if the person positive for COVID-19 was on campus.
All schools within the Hart District have been closed since last Spring, due to the coronavirus pandemic, with distance learning in place.
In September, Hart District Superintendent Mike Kuhlman sent an email to parents and students pushing back the potential reopening date to Nov. 13 for Santa Clarita high schools and junior highs.
The district originally planned to explore a “hybrid” model of distance and in-person learning by the five-week mark of the fall semester, then moving to Oct. 19, but the Los Angeles County “Safer at Home” Health Order prevented the reopening.
In order to fully reopen, Los Angeles County must remain at the criteria for Tier 2 for at least two weeks.
Currently, “small cohorts” of up to 12 students per classroom are allowed on campus, according to public health.

A student at Saugus HS tested positive two weeks ago. I hope the district is not waiting this long to tell people this. If this is someone more current, then they are lying.
The student at Saugus was on campus and at an off site facility for sports conditioning.
Doesn’t mean they got it at Saugus, most kids are out and socializing often. I see them out walking together and hanging ou!
Here comes the panic. It seems everyone believes what has been pronounced by the Governors office, staff (non-medical), and media which tries to conflate cases = illness = superspreaders = hospital = deaths. This is not science. This virus has a 99.9% survival rate (99.7 for those above 70). But this will certainly be enough for panic to ensue and closures to extend.
Going back to school isn’t looking good until SCV residents stop acting like a positive test is equivalent to a death. A positive test isn’t reason enough to keep lockdowns going and schools closed. I see teenagers hanging out everywhere in groups. Of course they are going to pass Covid around.
Perfect timing…
Emma,
I’m sure the ill student’s family doesn’t think it is perfect timing.
