An additional 1,857 cases of coronavirus have been identified in Los Angeles County, with 163 new cases in the Santa Clarita Valley Thursday, the largest one day spike in local cases yet reported, officials said.
A modified Health Officer Order and directives for the reopening of additional businesses is sett o be issued Thursday with an effective date of Friday, June 12. The Health Officer Order will allow for businesses such as day camps, gyms, museums, film and television productions and sporting events with no audiences to reopen once they implement the required protocols for infection control and distancing:
An additional 1,857 COVID-19 cases were reported Thursday across Los Angeles County. The County total now stands at 68,875 according to Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the L.A. County Department of Public Health.
Over 746,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted across Los Angeles County, with about 8 percent testing positive for the virus, according to Ferrer.
However, she noted last week that 86 percent of people who tested positive were asymptomatic, underlining the need for social distancing and other measures in order to prevent spread to others.
“People who are positive can spread the virus fairly easily to others, even if they don’t have any symptoms,” Ferrer said Monday. “Take care of each other by always wearing your face covering and keeping your distance when around others not in your household.”
7,190 people who tested positive for COVID-19 have been hospitalized at some point during their illness, accounting for roughly 11 percent of all positive cases within Los Angeles County.
Of those, 1,416 are currently hospitalized, according to public health officials.
46 new deaths were reported Thursday, bringing the total of COVID-19-related deaths to 2,813 in Los Angeles County, according to Ferrer.
About 93 percent of all deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to Ferrer, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.

*As of Wednesday, June 10, officials had recorded 1,307 cumulative cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 485 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center. Those cases are counted in both the Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.
Additionally, nine cases have been confirmed in nearby Agua Dulce, as well as 16 in Acton.
A Santa Clarita testing center opened on April 8 at the College of the Canyons Valencia campus.
This site is one of several that are up and running around the county, and the first in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Testing is set to run from 7 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m., seven days per week, according to the college.
The Santa Clarita coronavirus testing site is expected to continue at least through part of June, according to County officials.
Residents are encouraged to stay at home, according to the county public health order.

Real smart to open everything now! Soon we will have to quarantine all over again! Nice…….
Yes I understand there are many new cases, that’s bad, however how many have died. What happened to the Spanish flu, anyone remember?
Of the 160 new cases reported in SCV how many are from the jails?
Please provide that number on future articles. It’s an important number for the non-jailed residents of SCV to know since the biggest outbreak seems to be with the people confined within the jails.
The people confined in the jails are still in contact with people not in the jails. LASD employee and civilian positions all serve the jails. Where do they all go after work? Home to the SCV and going to get haircuts, the gym, dine-in restaurants etc.
We can’t pretend those numbers don’t impact our community.
