Santa Clarita Small Business Owners Granted Tax Relief By Governor’s Executive Order

California business taxpayers filing a return for less than $1 million in tax have received an additional three months to file returns and pay taxes, officials said Tuesday.

This is the result of an Executive Order issued by Governor Newsom, according to a statement from the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA).

The executive order from the governor’s desk came down on Monday night in an effort to expand tax relief for small business owners.

The extension pushes the due date for small businesses to submit their 1st Quarter 2020 returns to July 31, 2020.

“This expands on the relief previously granted to small businesses, giving them an extra 90 days to file and pay any business taxes and fees administered by CDTFA without incurring any penalties or interest,” said CDTFA Director Nick Maduros.

Additionally, all businesses have an extra 60 days to file claims for refund from CDTFA or to appeal a CDTFA decision to the Office of Tax Appeals, according to the statement.

The provisions of the executive order also apply to the other tax and fee programs administered by CDTFA, according to the statement.

Those that qualify for the extension are not required to submit a request for extension or request for relief from penalty or interest, according to CDTFA officials.

“By including the $1 million threshold, we’re able to offer much-needed relief to small businesses across the state while still maintaining the integrity of our local finance system,” Maduros said. “Approximately 55 percent of the sales and use tax collected goes back to our cities and counties, which count on this revenue to provide essential public services.”

Additional information on the relief available through the CDTFA is available here.
