In order to be released from jail, an arrestee or their loved one must pay the bail bonding company the premium cost of the bond, which is 10 percent in California, according to Inessa Chavez, vice president of All American Bail Bonds.

“For example, if your loved one is being held on $5,000 bail, you would pay $500– 10 percent –to the bail agent,” she explained.

Collateral may also be required to help guarantee the person makes all of their scheduled court appearances, and could include the deed to a house or the pink slip to a car.

“Collateral is returned when the entire premium is paid and all court appearances are made,” Chavez said.

Those purchasing bail bonds in Santa Clarita, called indemnitors, may also need to reimburse the bail agent for long-distance phone calls, excess travel expenses and posting fees, and defendants are responsible for their own attorney fees and court costs.

In addition, if the person “skips bail,” meaning they failed to arrive in court, the indemnitor is also responsible for bounty agent/skip tracer expenses to locate the defendant and payment of the entire bond amount.

“Skip tracing can run anywhere from $100 to $200 per hour,” Chavez said. “The more help the indemnitor provides in locating the defendant– now a fugitive –the less it will cost in the end.”
