Convicted Felon Arrested In Newhall For Possession Of Assault Rifle, Handguns

A convicted felon from Washington was arrested in Newhall Friday after deputies discovered multiple firearms and narcotics in his hotel room and vehicle.

Kristopher Cunanan, 30, of Tacoma, WA was arrested Friday on several felony charges, including illegal possession of a firearm and possession of narcotics.

Cunanan’s arrest came as deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s Special Assignment Team conducted patrol checks of several hotels along The Old Road near Lyons Avenue in Newhall.

Prior to finding Cunanan, deputies made contact with 35-year-old Kyle Armendariz in a parking lot on the 25200 block of The Old Road.

“During the contact, deputies ultimately discovered suspected illegal narcotics and unlawfully possessed prescription medication,” said Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “Due to the variety and amount of narcotics and medication, Armendariz was arrested for possession of controlled substances for the purpose of sales.”

As deputies conducted a field investigation after making contact with Armendariz, they were approached by Cunanan, who deputies later determined was also “involved in criminal conduct.”

“Deputies ultimately searched a vehicle and hotel room, seizing suspected Fentanyl, Methamphetamine, various tablets, two handguns, ammunition, and an assault rifle,” Miller said.

Deputies also discovered that Cunanan was previously convicted on a felony charge, according to Miller.

Both Cunanan and Armendariz were arrested and transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Jail for booking. Arrest records from the weekend indicate that Cunanan was booked with no bail, and Armendariz was booked on $50,000 bail.
