A man who was arrested in connection with a Valencia arson incident pled not guilty to formal charges filed against him Tuesday, officials said.
Spencer Greenberg, 29, is suspected of intentionally starting a fire behind the Ralph’s at 27760 McBean Parkway in Valencia at around 2:18 a.m. on June 8, according to officials.
Greenberg had reportedly been arrested twice by deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on narcotics charges several days before the alleged arson incident.
“On June 6, a post on Instagram featured a suspect clad in bright pink shorts and a dark-colored shirt,” reads a Facebook post from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “The man had been arrested twice by deputies in a matter of hours on narcotics charges.”
A few days after the Instagram post, detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Arson and Explosive unit sent out a bulletin asking for help in identifying an arson suspect, according to officials.
“Included in the bulletin were images of a suspect, wearing bright pink shorts and a dark-colored shirt, obtained from the store’s surveillance cameras,” the Facebook post reads. “Several observant deputies immediately recognized the suspect from the Instagram photo.”
Deputies provided the arson detectives with this information, and Greenberg was arrested in Hawthorne on June 14 in connection with the incident, according to officials.
The case was presented to officials with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, who decided to formally charge Greenberg with one count of arson of a structure, according to Ricardo Santiago, spokesperson for the District Attorney’s Office.
“He pleaded not guilty to the charge,” Santiago said.
Greenberg is set to return to court on July 8 for a preliminary setting.
