An Agua Dulce man suspected of kidnapping a toddler at knifepoint from her grandparents’ residence in 2016 was deemed “insane” on Thursday, officials said.
Thomas Ray Dillingham, 42, was charged with one count of kidnapping a victim under 14 with the use of a knife and one count of assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.
Dillingham pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to count one, kidnapping, with the knife allegation, according to Ricardo Santiago, spokesperson for the D.A.’s Office.
“The court evaluated the expert reports and found the defendant insane. He was committed to Patton State Hospital,” Santiago said.

Dillingham allegedly burst into a mobile home in March 2016 and took the 2-year-old at knifepoint from her grandparents, who were watching her, according to Sheriff’s officials.
When her grandfather went to the suspect’s residence in the same mobile home park and sought the child’s return, the suspect allegedly refused.
Sheriff’s deputies were able to recover the child, and they arrested Dillingham a short time later.
The toddler was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital “out of an abundance of caution” at the time of the incident, officials said, adding that she had “no visible signs of injuries or trauma.”
Dillingham has been ordered to serve his sentence of up to 28 years at a forensic psychiatric hospital, according to court officials.
“Persons judged by the court to be guilty of a crime, but not guilty because they were insane at the time of the crime, are committed to a state hospital for treatment for a period equal to the maximum sentence for their most serious offense, subordinate offenses and enhancements,” reads the Patton Hospital website.
The focus of treatment for this population involves helping the patient develop insight into their mental illness and how the symptoms of mental illness led to the commission of a crime, according to Patton Hospital officials.
