A Los Angeles man who was on probation for evading, was arrested after he led the California Highway Patrol (CHP) on a high-speed pursuit in a stolen vehicle that passed through Santa Clarita Tuesday evening.
Around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, the CHP was notified of a stolen GMC Sierra on the northbound 14 Freeway near Sand Canyon Road, said Officer Carlos Burgos-Lopez, spokesperson for the CHP Newhall Area Office.
Antelope Valley Area units located the stolen vehicle on Sierra Highway near Palmdale Boulevard.
As officers attempted to stop the vehicle, a pursuit ensued.
“The suspect drove back to SR-14 southbound and CHP Newhall area units were able to get into position to intercept the vehicle,” Burgos-Lopez said. “As the suspect vehicle entered the CHP Newhall Area, units deployed a spike strip and had a successful spike on SR-14 southbound north of Escondido Canyon Road.”
Despite the front driver side tire being punctured, the pursuit continued south on the 14 Freeway with speeds reaching 100 mph, according to officials.
The chase went south onto the 5 Freeway before the suspect continued onto the 405 Freeway.
The suspect exited at Roscoe Boulevard, where the chase came to an end.
Ian Karune, 20, from Los Angeles, was arrested for taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent and evading, both felonies, according to Burgos-Lopez.
During the officers’ investigation, they learned Karune was on probation out of Los Angeles County for evading law enforcement, according to Burgos-Lopez.
The suspect was booked into the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail.
