A carjacking suspect out of Fontana was taken into custody by the help of a K-9 unit in Valencia after an hours long pursuit Thursday.
Around 7:15 p.m. Thursday, a man allegedly carjacked an individual at gunpoint at a gas station near Citrus and Merrill Avenues in Fontana, said Sgt. Heaviside with the Fontana Police Department.
Officers with the Fontana Police Department located the stolen vehicle moments later and attempted to make an enforcement stop, according to officials.
At that time, the suspect fled and a pursuit was initiated.
As seen from media coverage over the chase, the suspect reached speeds of 30 to 40 mph while on the freeways for a majority of the chase.
The carjacking suspect led the Fontana Police Department into Los Angeles, through Hollywood before going north on the 5 Freeway headed for Santa Clarita.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) assisted in the pursuit, preventing traffic from passing the fleeing driver.
The pursuit ended on the northbound 5 Freeway near Magic Mountain Parkway around 9:30 p.m. when one of the tires on the vehicle went flat.
The suspect was taken into custody after being bit by a K-9 unit.
Christian Reynoso, a spokesperson with the Los Angeles County Fire Department confirmed they responded to treat a dog bite wound, however, could not confirm if the suspect was transported to the hospital.
Once the pursuit was terminated, the officers determined the gun used in the carjacking was not real.
“The suspect used a simulated firearm, but the victim thought it was real at the time. So during the pursuit we believed he was armed,” Heaviside said.
The suspect was taken into custody and booked into the West Valley Detention Center in San Bernardino.
