Deputies responded to a Newhall hit-and-run crash Saturday afternoon, leading to a DUI arrest, officials said.
The incident was reported at about 2 p.m. Saturday on Newhall Avenue and 14th Street, according to Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
“They were able to track down the suspect fairly easy because the license plate of his vehicle came off and was left at the scene,’ Miller said.
When deputies went to the address on record, they found a vehicle with visible body damage that was missing a plate. The plate that was still intact on the vehicle matched the one that was found, according to Miller.
“A male adult was observed slumped over in the vehicle with the engine still running,” Miller said.
Deputies woke the driver and immediately noticed the strong smell of alcohol. The 23-year-old driver, Carlos Martinez, allegedly had a 0.14 B.A.C. after a preliminary alcohol screening test, according to Miller.
Deputies arrested the Newhall man on charges of DUI, hit and run, and driving without a license, according to Sheriff’s officials.
Martinez was transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail, where he is being held on $17,500 bail.
