A hike at Towsley Canyon took an unexpected turn Sunday morning after a vehicle was reportedly broken into, but a witness’s quick actions helped deputies quickly locate and arrest the suspect.
Deputies were called to the popular hiking area after someone reported seeing a man breaking into a car, according to officials with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
“Deputies quickly located the suspect, who had allegedly forced entry by punching the car’s door lock,” said officials with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
The man, identified as 23-year-old Alexander Abarca, was allegedly found with multiple cell phones and a wallet that did not belong to him, along with burglary tools, officials said.
Abarca was taken into custody on suspicion of felony burglary, along with misdemeanor charges for possession of burglary tools and receiving stolen property. He remains in custody without bail as the investigation continues.
“Thank you to the vigilant community member who reported the suspicious activity,” said the SCV Sheriff’s Station. “Your quick action made a difference.”
As a reminder, deputies are encouraging hikers to take valuables like phones and wallets with them on the trail, instead of leaving them behind in their cars.

Good job to the cops and the person who made the report. Thank you. Now the courts need to do their job and make sure this criminal does jail time. And when released should have strict supervisory probation. Also must get and keep a job. If he reoffends in any way, back to jail and double the penalties. They need to be taught in jail that they better learn or they will live their life in jail. No more catch and release BS.
