South LA Shooting Suspect Taken Into Custody In Santa Clarita

A South LA shooting suspect wanted for a double homicide was arrested last week in Canyon Country, officials confirmed Wednesday.

Jonathan Charles Johnson is believed to be responsible for the murders of Jose Flores Velazquez, 24, who was pronounced dead on arrival, and Alfredo Carrera, 24, who died at the hospital last Wednesday, said Lt. Derrick Alfred with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.

Johnson is a suspected gang member in the South LA shooting who had no relationship with the victims, according to Alfred.

On Friday, Aug. 16 around 9:30 a.m., Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies located a vehicle matching the description of a wanted homicide suspect in the O’Riley’s parking lot near Via Princessa and Sierra Highway, said Sgt. Joel Nebel at the time of the arrest.

“We did conduct a traffic stop in that area on a felony vehicle that was connected to a homicide,” said Shirley Miller, a spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “There were two occupants taken to the station to be interviewed by Homicide Bureau investigators.”

The female occupant of the vehicle was released after being interviewed and is not being charged with any crime as of this time, according to officials.

On Aug. 14, Century Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to reports of gunshots at the 1100 block of East 68th Street in the unincorporated area of Los Angeles, according to Sheriff’s officials.

“Upon arrival, they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds,” officials said Wednesday night. “One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene. The second was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.”

Additionally, another man who was suffering from a gunshot wound was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released, officials said.

Investigators later learned that the two deceased victims in the South LA shooting had been standing outside a parked car along the residential street when “the suspect’s vehicle drove up and a passenger opened fire, striking both men.”

The firearm used in the murders is still outstanding and the investigation is ongoing, according to Sheriff’s officials.

Johnson is being charged with one count of attempted murder, one count of discharging a firearm from a vehicle and two counts of murder, according to officials.

The case is being prosecuted by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office Hardcore Gang Unit.

Johnson is currently being held with $2,000,000 bail.

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work.
