Stevenson Ranch Man Arrested After Striking Elderly Victim With Wooden Table Leg

A Stevenson Ranch man was arrested Thursday night after allegedly striking an elderly family member with a wooden leg from a broken table, sending one to the hospital, officials said.

At around 9 p.m. Thursday, deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to reports of a family disturbance at the 25000 block of Blake Court in Stevenson Ranch, according to Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the station.

“The suspect was reportedly intoxicated when he got into a verbal argument that escalated into physical,” Miller said. “The suspect is the victim’s adult son.”

The suspect allegedly threatened physical harm to the victim, and at one point, “grabbed the wooden leg off of a broken table and struck the victim over the head,” according to Miller.

“The victim was treated for injuries at the hospital,” Miller said.

Deputies arrested the suspect, 39-year-old Richard Staples, on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, according to arrest logs. However, those may not be the only charges that Staples faces.

“Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the incident, and will be seeking to also file elder abuse charges against the suspect,” Miller said.

Staples was transported and booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, where he is currently being held on $30,000 bail.
