Special Needs Students Provided Services By Santa Clarita SELPA

Actively seeking out all individuals under 21 with special needs, the Santa Clarita Valley Special Education Local Plan Area (SCV SELPA) provides guidance to students and families throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.

Possessing the intent to deliver high-quality special education services to students with disabilities, the SCV SELPA serves approximately 6,100 students with a diverse range of disabilities in the most effective manner practicable, according to the organization.

Consisting of Castaic Union School District, Newhall School District, Saugus Union School District, Sulphur Springs Union School District and William S. Hart Union High School District, all five school districts of the Santa Clarita Valley work in collaboration to assist eligible students with related services throughout their schooling.

“Every district has its own procedures when accommodating assisted learning, but SELPA provides further guidance to identify adequate placement for students to reach their desired goals and objectives,” said Elizabeth Calzadillas, secretary for SCV SELPA.

Primary services provided by SCV SELPA include community outreach, training and staff development, information and referrals, funding and compliance, interagency coordination and family support.

“Community Advisory meetings are held every month to discuss any updates or questions regarding special education,” Calzadillas said. “These meetings are open to everyone and are attended by at least three representatives from each district.”

SCV SELPA’s special education programs are available to all eligible students with birth disabilities in the least restrictive environment in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Special education assistance is determined upon assessed educational needs of each individual student by an IEP team through each particular school district.

If you have reason to be concerned about your child’s development or believe your child may be in need of special education due to a physical, mental, emotional, learning or speech problem, contact either the SELPA office or your local school district Special Education Department for more information to refer a child for special education services.
