Castaic High School Official Gives Insight Into Video Production Program

With Castaic High School’s grand opening this fall rapidly approaching, a school official is talking about the video production pathway as part of the Career Technical Education program.

“It’s going to be a career and technical education-based high school, so we’ll be able to offer experiences, especially in the electives, that other high schools just aren’t able to offer,” said Charles Deuschle, a video production teacher and chair of the Practical Arts Department at Castaic High School.

“The goal is to really start training students and giving them the skills that they need to either enter the workforce directly out of high school with some sort of accreditation or certification, or continue on with higher education study if that’s their ultimate goal,” Deuschle continued.

Deuschle taught video production at Saugus and Hart High Schools before moving on to Golden Valley High School ahead of its grand opening, helping to plan the video production program “from scratch” and building it up over the last 15 years.

“(Video) is really the language of this generation,” Deuschle said. “Every student has a phone, every student is using Snapchat or Instagram or recording videos. It’s our goal to just focus them a little bit better, to use those videos in a more appropriate manner at times.”

Deuschle noted that he often has students excelling in his video production classes but failing every other class, so the unique opportunity to place an added focus on this career pathway at Castaic High School can help these students successfully enter the workforce with the skills they need right after graduation.

“It’s not necessarily that they’re not college material, but (video) is where their passion is,” said Deuschle. “It’s something very hands-on, it’s something very visual, and it’s an environment that they tend to thrive in.”

Because the majority of students have no past experience when they start a video production class, Deuschle called it a “great leveler” among the students.

“Everyone is starting right at the same level and learning along with each other,” he said. “Everyone is really starting off helping each other, building off each other’s skills and knowledge, and then by the end of the year, seeing the growth that they’ve made since the very beginning of the year, it’s just absolutely amazing.”
