The spending plan anticipates a 2.1 percent reduction in funds due to a declining enrollment figure that has affected several Santa Clarita Valley school districts.
“The most significant factor for determining school district revenues is the calculation of average daily attendance (ADA), or the number of students in school on a daily basis,” according to the district’s budget presentation.
The William S. Hart Union High School District is projecting a continued and gradual decline in enrollment, which it has faced since 2007-08, due in part to an aging population in the Santa Clarita Valley, mirroring a trend seen at most local public schools.
The enrollment is projected to be about 22,335 in 2018-19, which is the first year Castaic High School would open, a little over 200 students fewer than the 22,583 who attended the district in 2015-16. ADA enrollment, or the percentage of students who actually showed, was expected to be 21,537.
The William S. Hart Union High School District serves grades 7 through 12 enrolled in six comprehensive high schools (Canyon, Golden Valley, Hart, Saugus, West Ranch, and Valencia), a continuation high school (Bowman), a middle college high school (Academy of the Canyons), an independent study school (Learning Post), a home school support program (Hart at Home), six junior high schools (Arroyo Seco, La Mesa, Placerita, Rancho Pico, Rio Norte, Sierra Vista), an adult school (Golden Oak), alternative education programs (Sequoia School, Transitional Learning Center, Action Academy), Career Technical Education and Regional Occupational Program.
The following elementary districts feed into the District: Newhall School District (K-6), Saugus Union School District (K-6), Sulphur Springs Union School District and Castaic Union School District (K-8).

Does the increased enrollment at private and charter schools have anything to do with decreased enrollment in public schools?
And if it does that’s better for people who are legal residents, work here and pay taxes!
Mark….. GET A LIFE DUDE! You comment on nearly every article. So sad ?
Hi Dan,
I have a life and I try ever so hard to use my brain to think past the face value of these stories and maybe promote some thought processes in others. It also shows Carl Goldman that I do read the stories his station puts out there.

Our Local Enrollment is decreasing and we just voted to dump millions of your local property taxes on College of the Canyons! I guess we are paying for those from other areas to attend College of the Canyons. People are stupid to keep voting to pay taxes for anything. We pay billions for illegals we should not be paying for. We should have plenty for our schools but we waste so much on illegals that just don’t make it in our country. NO more handouts! Start to take care of our own.
