Threat Against La Mesa Junior High School Prompts Increased Sheriff’s Presence

An alleged threat against La Mesa Junior High School has prompted an increased law enforcement presence on campus Thursday, officials said.

The reported threat was written on a water tank at the back of the campus, leading administrators to contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, according to Principal Michele Krantz.

“The message was difficult to read, as it had been scribbled out,” said Krantz in an email sent to parents Wednesday. “We have contacted law enforcement and we are investigating the issue.”

As of Thursday morning, administrators did not have specific details to share, other than the fact that the threat was indirect and did not mention any specific person, Krantz said.

“The threat did mention April 25,” Krantz said. “Law enforcement, in an abundance of caution, has arranged for an expanded presence in the area that day.”

The campus remains open Thursday and is not on lockdown, according to La Mesa Junior High School officials.

Detectives from the COBRA unit are currently investigating the threat, and are expected to release more details Thursday afternoon, according to Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Sheriff’sm Station.

“We are actively investigating this incident, we take all threats seriously,” Miller said. “The campus is not on lockdown, but there are more deputies on campus and in the area.”

If residents or their students have any information regarding this matter, they are encouraged to contact La Mesa Junior High School administration or the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. A text-a-tip hotline is also available at 661-524-5166.
