Former Insight teen treatment program client, Kara Long, and her family sat down with Frederik Schulin on the Insight Treatment Hour to discuss the effectiveness of teen peer support programs and their effects on teens suffering from mental health issues.

“Here at Insight we believe that the kids really need to meet other kids who have been struggling with the same emotional issues as they have,” said Frederik Schulin, host of the Insight Treatment Hour.

According to Schulin, many kids who attend the Insight teen treatment program have been struggling with mental health concerns for years before they join the Insight program and because of this these teens may develop a feeling that their situation is never going to change.

Kara Long went on to discuss her own issues with mental health. According to Long, she struggled with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, self-harm and anorexia from a young age.

“I didn’t realize what I was doing,” Long said about her first struggles with mental health at a young age, “I would just kind of get upset and take my emotions out on myself physically.”

“In fifth grade I began dieting and that was really the start of my eating disorder which consumed my adolescence,” Long said.

Long went on to describe more about her struggles with mental health issues throughout her teenage years and the various teen treatment programs she was placed into.

“By the time I was at Insight I was a lot more out of my shell except I still had crippling social anxiety,” Long said.

“It was my peers at Insight that got me to interact with them,” Long said.

According to Long, while she was participating in the Insight program, she was invited by the staff at Insight to speak to high schoolers about her own mental health struggles. Long said that she recognized the importance of teens hearing her own story even though she was still struggling herself at that time.

“I just thought how different my life would have been if I had heard someone share what they were going through,” Long said.

Long said that she was at first when she began speaking to high schoolers, but that a particular case impacted her a lot. Long said that after she spoke a student approached her afterwards and thanked her for sharing her story. According to Long, that student reported they had been struggling with mental illness and hearing Long’s story encouraged that student to seek treatment.

Since then Long has worked with the Insight teen treatment program to tell her story to more teens in hopes it will help them as well.
