Governor’s Executive Order Calls For Vote-By-Mail In CA-25 Runoff Election

Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order on Friday which extended vote-by-mail to three upcoming special elections, including the May 12 runoff election between Christy Smith and Mike Garcia for California’s 25th Congressional District seat.

The order comes as part of government efforts to protect public health and combat the spread of coronavirus, according to officials.

Elections across the nation have been impacted by the coronavirus, as seven states and Puerto Rico recently postponed their presidential primary elections.

Under the executive order, county election officials are to distribute vote-by-mail to all voters eligible to participate in the special election, including the runoff election for CA-25 scheduled for May 12.

The order also encourages local officials to make a limited number of polling places available for replacement ballots or to help voters who need assistance on election day.

Elections officials are expected to “provide maximum possible notice to voters about how to participate in each of these elections, paying particular attention to the needs of voters at high risk from COVID-19, individuals with disabilities and other voters with particularized needs” under the terms of the executive order.

In addition to calling for changes to the way the upcoming special election is conducted, the governor’s order also extends the deadlines for the ballot counting, tabulation and other responsibilities related to California’s presidential primary election for 21 days to allow for the implementation of appropriate social distancing measures.

The executive order is available in its entirety, here.

  1. He’s jumping the gun, per usual. Our President has NOT announced this quarantine will last into May as yet. NO governor decisions should be made until the leader of our country first decides

    • Fortunately our president has no say in our state special elections.
Nothing was said about the general election which is held in November.
Our governor is miles ahead of the federal response to the pandemic for which I applaud him.

  2. The election results have already been determined. Just like every resent rigged election, the ballot harvesting has given the victory to the Democrat’s choice. In the last election, and the recent LA District Attorney race, one candidate was substantially ahead, but late harvested votes substantially pushed another candidate.

  3. It is unfortunate that I did not receive a ballot in the mail. I wonder how many other voters did not receive theirs? What is going on here? 🙁
