Garcia Live Interview With KHTS, Discusses Supply Chain Issues, Labor Shortages

On Wednesday, Congressman Mike Garcia, R- Santa Clarita, went on-air with KHTS Radio to discuss recent news of supply-chain issues, the Great Resignation labor shortage and the movement of truckers to other states.

Congressman Garcia discussed supply-chain problems, labor shortages and export concerns on-air with KHTS this week.

“If you recall, this thing started off with just a bunch of ships being anchored off the coast of Long Beach and Los Angeles in the harbors there, and then it rippled into the ports where the containers were piling up,” Garcia said. “And then, it rippled into the trucking industry where we don’t have enough trucks to move the containers.”

The Congressman referenced the fact that the backlogs are starting to break up a bit, with the harbors seeing some progress, before then turning to his beliefs on import dependency.

“We are way too dependent on imported goods coming through our ports right now, and this is coming to a head, obviously, on the heels of COVID but also with a lack of workers,” Garcia said. “A shortage of folks working in the ports, but also a shortage of truckers.”

Garcia has previously commented on the causes of the reported backlog of shipping containers off the Los Angeles coastline, including the AB 5 initiative which was described as a job-killing bill restricting everyone from freelance writers to rideshare drivers to newspaper carriers to independently contract.

The Congressman turned to a discussion of his beliefs that truckers generally were choosing to leave California due to AB 5.

Garcia referred to his previously-stated beliefs about supply chain issues being connected to the California Air Resource Board (CARB) regulations on shipping trucks, designed to reduce fuel emissions to improve air quality.

“Another dynamic we’re seeing is because China is effectively the importer, in this case, bringing the goods to the United States, they’re hitting a point where they’re not able to ship to the United States because their empty containers are not going back to China,” Garcia said.

The conversation then shifted to a discussion about providing meals during the holidays to low-income families and veterans locally, through donations to the local food pantry and other programs.

“About a third of our military personnel actually qualify for food stamps, which is amazing to hear that statistic,” Garcia said. “Hopefully in this National Defense Authorization Act, we see something more meaningful for pay raises besides the three or four percent we typically see.”

Garcia has advocated for the Fiscal Year 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (FY2022 NDAA), which calls for a 2.7 percent pay increase, although the Congressman has stated that it is only the bare minimum of what veterans need.

  1. Why would many work when Xiden/Newsom will pay them more to stay home??

  2. Check your facts, I know you are resistant to truth, but here goes: The US unemployment rate fell to 4.6% in October 2021, which is the LOWEST rate since March 2020 and slightly lower than the 4.7% market analysts had predicted. The unemployment rate PRE-PANDEMIC crisis was 3.5% which demonstrates that while unemployment figures are still high, our nation is slowly recovering.

Your lies are tired, weak and quite frankly embarrassing. Please seek professional help, you desperately need it.
