Santa Clarita City Council Approves Funding For Homeless Shelter Relocation, Henry Mayo Expansion

The Santa Clarita City Council voted to approve over $200,000 in funding for the relocation of the Bridge to Home homeless shelter.

In a regular meeting Tuesday evening, the Santa Clarita City Council approved a combined $210,000 in funding for the temporary transfer of the Bridge to Home shelter from the Newhall Community Center to a location on Pine Street in Newhall.

“Bridge to Home would like to express our deepest gratitude to the City of Santa Clarita and to all the residents of Newhall for allowing our homeless neighbors to reside temporarily at the Newhall Community Center,” said Bridge to Home Executive Director Michael Foley. “The City has been a steadfast partner and supporter in the effort to end homelessness and in helping to find and fund a new temporary location.”

The council approved one-time funding of $100,000 and a zero-interest loan of no more than $110,000 to support the temporary move, which is projected to last up to 22 months as a new, permanent shelter is built on Drayton Street.

“As we see everything is opening back up, and it’s time to get the community center back to its original intent,” said Councilmember Cameron Smyth. “It’s been a great way to support Bridge to Home during this time but… it’s time to make the move.”

The new shelter facility was approved by the City Planning Commission in March.

Bridge to home needs to raise $2.5 million from the community to find the new shelter before they are able to access further funding from Los Angeles County.

The City of Santa Clarita donated the land for the site and is set to provide additional funding for the construction of the facility.

During the meeting, the city council also unanimously approved the Henry Mayo Newhall Specific Plan, with the additional condition that Henry Mayo reconsider implementing paid parking at their facility.

The changes would allow for the construction of a 292-stall parking structure above the existing underground structure and the creation of a 200,000 square foot inpatient building.

The city council voted to approve an increase of hourly pay for elementary school crossing guards to $18.67 per hour and, for crossing guard leads, an increase in pay to $20.07.

City officials awarded Robinson Associates for Juvenile Intervention Team Civilian Investigator a 14-month contract to provide the city with professional youth drug intervention services.

The city council awarded JAS Pacific, Scott Fazekas & Associates, Interwest Consulting Group, and TRB and Associates with one-year contracts to provide building permit-related services to the city.
