As the girls’ flag football season in the Santa Clarita Valley heads into its final stretch, Hart, West Ranch, and Vasquez are leading the pack in the Foothill League standings.
Hart (15-6, 10-1)
The reigning Foothill League champions, the Hart Hawks, currently sit atop the league once again. Hart is coming off two consecutive tournament losses to Marshall and Channel Islands, but opened that tournament with a 12-6 win over Ayala.
In the win, quarterback Hannah Cook threw for 111 yards and two touchdowns, both hauled in by Marley Mehegan.
In league play, Hart has been dominant, suffering just one loss to West Ranch on September 2.
The Hart will face Redondo Union in a non-league matchup on Tuesday before wrapping up the season with three crucial league games, starting with West Ranch.
West Ranch (10-3, 8-2)
West Ranch is also entering the final stretch on a two-game losing streak, both coming in Foothill League play, making the upcoming games even more critical.
The Wildcats will take on first-place Hart on Wednesday in a highly anticipated rematch. A win would give West Ranch a season sweep over the Hawks and keep their league title hopes alive.
West Ranch will rely heavily on its defense, led by Leila Barton, who has 10 sacks and averages three tackles per game. Rachelle Clark leads the team with eight interceptions, while Savannah Patton has added five of her own.
After Hart, West Ranch has two more league games left to close out the season.
Vasquez (10-9, 6-5)
Vasquez enters the upcoming week as the only top-four team coming off a win, preparing to host Valencia. The Mustangs edged the Vikings 12-6 in their previous matchup.
With Castaic sharing the same league record, every game becomes vital for Vasquez as they try to hold onto the third spot in the standings.
Castaic (9-9, 6-5)
The Castaic Coyotes find themselves in a tightly contested race for third place in the Foothill League standings, tied with Vasquez at 6-5. With only a few games left in the regular season, every down, drive, and decision carries extra weight.
The Coyotes are set to open their final stretch with a pivotal matchup against Saugus on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Saugus High School.
Castaic has leaned on a balanced offensive attack all season, with standout junior Pyper Ormes leading the way. Ormes has been a dual threat out of the backfield and at receiver, scoring nine total touchdowns and consistently keeping defenses off-balance. Her versatility has been key in tight games and could play a major role in the closing stretch.
Defensively, the Coyotes boast one of the more disruptive fronts in the league. Khloe Duran has emerged as a dominant force on the line, recording 11 sacks so far this season and routinely pressuring opposing quarterbacks.
In the secondary, Kaycie Jackson and Charlotte Wheeler have anchored the pass defense, each tallying four interceptions and forcing opposing offenses to think twice about throwing in their direction.
Castaic’s path to securing a playoff spot or at least finishing in the top three will depend on how they handle this upcoming three-game gauntlet. After Saugus, they’ll face Golden Valley and finish with a crucial game against Valencia.
Valencia (7-15-1, 4-7)
Valencia has already shown improvement over last season, doubling their win total in league play and picking up additional wins overall.
With just three games left, the Vikings don’t have much room for a major surge, but a strong finish, combined with some help, could allow them to climb the standings. Their final push begins Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. on the road against Vasquez.
Saugus (8-11-1, 4-7)
The Centurions are in a tight race with Valencia for a higher league standing as the season winds down, with both teams holding identical league records. Each team has already notched a win over the other, making the outcome of their remaining games crucial in gaining the upper hand.
Saugus is 2-2-1 over its last five games, including a 19-6 win against league rival West Ranch.
Next up, Saugus will take on Castaic in another league matchup on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Golden Valley (6-9, 3-8)
In their inaugural season, Golden Valley is aiming to finish at or above .500. Currently at .400, they have four games remaining.
They’ll face Quartz Hill in a non-league game Monday at 4 p.m. Golden Valley is 1-1 this season against teams from the Antelope Valley. After that, they’ll close out the season with league games against Canyon, Valencia, and Castaic.
Canyon (2-10-1, 2-8)
Also in their first season, Canyon has struggled, with their last win coming nine games ago, on September 2, against Golden Valley. Coincidentally, their next game is a rematch against Golden Valley, set for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
