Santa Clarita Week Eight Football Recap

In the Foothill League, the Valencia Vikings continue to dominate as they remain undefeated in league play.

In the Heritage and Mesquite Leagues both SCCS and Trinity took a tough loss but look to bounce back this week.

Valencia (7-1, 4-0) Vs. West Ranch (5-3, 3-1):

The Vikings dominated from start to finish, and stunned West Ranch, 42-14.

The Vikings jumped out to an early lead after Isaac Shin’s interception, the first of five for the Vikings, was returned for a touchdown on the first drive of the game.

A few plays later, the Vikings recovered a fumble that set up a scoring opportunity for the Valencia offense, increasing their lead to 14-0.

Before the end of the first quarter, Valencia scored two more touchdowns to pull ahead 28-0.

“We did a great job of starting fast, to start the game, it’s a testament of our guys to play at the level they are capable of playing,” said Valencia Head Coach Larry Muir. “Our guys did a great job of playing with intensity and focus early.”

Valencia was firing on all cylinders, even having blocked a field goal in the second quarter that was returned 60 yards for a touchdown by Nick Seymour.

Shortly following the big play by Valencia, the Wildcats drove down the field and ended the drive with Liam McDaniel throwing his first passing touchdown of the night to Zach Wyre, to bring the game to 35-7.

During halftime, coach Muir reminded his team to keep their foot on the gas in the second half because West Ranch is more than capable of coming back, referring to the Wildcats week seven comeback against Hart when they scored 42 points in the second half.

At the end of the 3rd quarter, West Ranch found the endzone once again to slice into the Vikings 35-14 lead.

Immediately following that score the Wildcats were successful on their onside kick attempt.

Even though they came up with the ball they were unable to get any points out of it.

While West Ranch was unable to score, Vikings’ Brady Bretthauer rushed for his second touchdown of the night and his sixth rushing touchdown of the season.

Valencia walked away one step closer to becoming Foothill League Champions, after their 42-24 victory.

This week Valencia will be on a bye but will return to action Friday Oct. 20 to take on Hart.

West Ranch is scheduled to play Golden Valley Friday Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. from Canyon High School.

Hart (5-2, 2-1) Vs Saugus (0-7, 0-3):

After a tough loss to West Ranch, the Indians bounced back in a dominant fashion to beat Saugus 44-14.

In the matchup Hart scored 41 of their 44 points in the first half, with three points being scored in the fourth quarter.

While the Centurions were unable to pick up the win there were some positives that were able to be taken away.

Such as the fact that they scored 14 points and it was the first time in three games they scored a touchdown.

Saugus quarterback Jake Nuttall had himself a nice game with 171 passing yards and a passing touchdown to go with it.

On the ground Kayden Ky-yeith had a nice game for the Centurions,  with 142 rushing yards and a touchdown.

While Hart had a big win, for the second week in a row they were unable to produce points in the second half.

The Indians have the weapons to make it possible with quarterback Timmy Larkins, who leads the league with 1,720 passing yards and receiver Shawn Irwin who leads the league with 926 receiving yards.

This week Hart will need to play four quarters of football when they take on Canyon.

Hart is scheduled to play Canyon Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. from the College of the Canyons.

Saugus looks to turn things around Friday Oct. 13 when they take on Castaic at Valencia High School with kickoff at 7 p.m.

Canyon (5-2, 1-2) Vs Golden Valley (2-6, 0-4):

On Friday the Cowboys got their first league victory of the season in a 24-21 win over Golden Valley.

The Cowboys started off strong by going up 10-0 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Grizzly defense stepped up and did not allow any points and managed to get a safety on the Cowboys offense to go into halftime down 10-2.

Golden Valley’s Isaiah Orozco had a stellar night running the ball with 163 rushing yards and a trio of touchdowns in the second half.

The Golden Valley defense kept the team in the game with three interceptions and a fumble recovery.

While the Grizzly defense made some splash plays, so did the Canyon defense with an interception of their own.

Ultimately Golden Valley’s efforts were not enough to get them a win against the Cowboys as they would fall short 24-21.

Golden Valley looks to get their first league win on the season Friday Oct.13 when they take on West Ranch at 7 p.m. at Canyon High School.

Canyon is set to face Hart at College of the Canyons Friday Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.

Trinity Classical Academy & Santa Clarita Christian

After going 2-0 to start the season Trinity Classical Academy have found themselves in a slump, losing their past five games.

In each of their five losses they have had over 40 points scored on them with the most recent loss coming from Riverside Prep.

The Knights (2-5, 0-2 ) losing streak continued as Riverside Prep (3-4, 1-1) picked up a 52-24 victory in a Mesquite League game.

While Trinity was not able to pick up the win in their 52-24 loss, this is the most points they have scored in over a month.

If they can continue to put up points and their defense can keep opposing teams out of the endzone they have a chance at turning their season around.

Trinity is scheduled to play Linfield Christian Friday Oct.13 at 7 p.m. in Temecula Valley.

In the Heritage League, Santa Clarita Christian (4-2, 1-0) lost 46-0 to Flintridge Prep (5-0) in non-league play.

This is only the Cardinals second loss of the season and they look to get back in the win column Saturday Oct. 14 when they face Faith Baptist at College of the Canyons starting at 7 p.m.
