Friday night, Saugus’ (14-6, 5-1) girls basketball team defeated Golden Valley, but the spotlight after the game was on Jasmine Garcia, who broke a Foothill League record for the most three-pointers in a single game by a girls player.
Garcia knocked down 10 three-pointers, finishing with 30 points in the Centurions’ 79–39 win over Golden Valley (10-8, 1-4). Not only was it a league record on the girls’ side, but it was also a school record for both boys and girls.
“Jasmine is the best girls’ shooter that I have ever coached in my career, and I’ve coached for 26 years,” said Saugus Head Coach Anthony Falasca.
Falasca also credited Eva Marie Rios and Brianna Burroughs for their shooting, as the duo combined for 26 points in the victory. For the Grizzlies, Brighton Blythe was their go-to scorer, leading the team with 22 points and four rebounds.

With the Centurions building a sizable lead, the lopsided score allowed several bench players to get meaningful minutes.
“That’s the hardest part as a coach is giving those girls and the players a chance when they bust their butt just as hard as a starter in practice,” said Falasca. “So yeah, having a 40-point win gets them time and experience, so for next year they’re not deer in a headlight, trying to figure out how to play.”
In addition to getting extended bench minutes, Falasca said the team was finally able to return to a normal practice schedule for the first time in a while.
He said winter break, along with Christmas and a busy game schedule, limited the team to shoot-arounds and only occasional full practices.
“So we got to actually work on some things; we put in some stuff that we’re going to see in the second half of league,” said Falasca. “We tried some of that today and knock on wood, it worked better than I thought it was going to work.”
Falasca added that while the adjustments worked in this game, the results could look different against other league opponents, but he still believes in his team heading into the second half of the season.
“I don’t know that I’d want to play us coming in the second half because I like to play chess and some of these other coaches are playing checkers,” said Falasca. “We circled a couple games, they know who they are, and they’re ready for us, and I guarantee we’re circled on their schedule too.”
Since the dominant win Friday, the Centurions defeated Mira Costa 49–30 before falling to South High School.
Saugus will next hit the road to face South Pasadena on Monday at 7 p.m. The Grizzlies look to get back in the win column Tuesday when they play Valencia on the road at 5 p.m.
