2016 Rio Olympic Games

The 2016 Rio Olympics has come to a close, and all four Olympians with Santa Clarita roots made the podium earning medals in swimming, volleyball and track & field.

Abbey Weitzeil won gold and silver medals as part of the women’s 4×100 meter medley (gold) and freestyle (silver) relay teams.

Anthony Ervin went 2-for-2 in his events, winning gold in the men’s 4×100 meter freestyle relay and the 50 meter freestyle.

Allyson Felix won a silver medal in the women’s 400 meter race as well as gold medals in the 4×100 and 4×400 meter relays.

David Smith took home the bronze medal for USA Volleyball, defeating Russia in the 3rd place game.

Medal Count - Final

For reference on the dominance of the United States at this summer’s Rio Games, the Pac-12 Conference would have placed fifth in overall medals while the state of Texas earned the third-most gold medals.

Allyson Felix became the most decorated Olympic track & field athlete in women’s U.S. history this past weekend. The Santa Clarita native won her sixth gold medal on the track, the first woman to do so for the United States.

The U.S. women retained the gold medal in the 4×400 meter relay for the sixth consecutive Olympics.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers (69-55) completed a wild four game series today in Cincinatti today and leave Ohio with a 2-2 split.

LA started off shaky, getting blown out in the first two games of the series by a combined 20-3 score; however, the power bats came alive in the final two games by outscoring the Reds 22-9.

Adrian Gonzalez put on a show in Monday’s matinee finale, going 3-for-6 with 3 bombs and 8 RBI to power the Dodgers to an 18-9 win. Gonzalez is having his best month of the season with a .370 batting average, 6 home runs and 19 RBI in August.

As a team the Dodgers went yard seven times.

Quick turnaround for Los Angeles. They head home immediately for a midweek NL West showdown with the rival Giants.

Kenta Maeda will fill the role of Ace on the mound Tuesday, dueling Madison Bumgarner at Dodger Stadium. First pitch is at 7:10 with the great Vin Scully on the call on your hometown station, AM-1220 KHTS.

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams slipped past the Kansas City Chiefs, 21-20, to remain perfect at the Coliseum in preseason play.

Both quarterbacks threw a touchdown, but Case Keenum looks poised to start Week 1. Jared Goff has improved on a weekly basis but his development will take more time and Keenum is the player most prepared for NFL snaps at this time.

OFFENSE: One unit Los Angeles has proven to be a major strength of the team is at running back. Third-stringer Malcom Brown scored a receiving touchdown and had 5.7 yards per carry on 12 touches. He will compete behind Todd Gurley and Benny Cunningham for playing time.

DEFENSE: Cornerback EJ Gaines played in a live game for the first time since 2014, having fully recovered from a foot injury that sidelined him for all of 2015. He is in competition with Coty Sensabaugh and Lamarcus Joyner for the No. 2 corner spot behind Trumaine Johnson.
