Santa Clarita High School Basketball

Santa Clarita playoff basketball went a perfect 2-0 Wednesday night in the boys and girls CIF Division 3 State Tournament.

Trailing 37-36 heading to the 4th quarter of a tight game through the first 3, Hart took over in the final eight minutes and dominated in crunch time, outscoring Crenshaw 25-14 to capture the opening round game 61-61.

The 8/9 matchup is typically as balanced of teams as possible, but its a great credit to head coach Tom Kelly and the Indians for traveling to Crenshaw and leaving with a double digit victory. Ryan Kaneshiro led the Indians with 17 points.

In the girls tournament, the Canyon Cowboys flexed at home against Exeter and it wasn’t close. The Cowboys cruised to a 31-18 half time lead and pushed the game further out of reach after the break en route to a 63-43 win.

Canyon showed no signs of a championship loss hangover from the weekend.

Santa Clarita High School Soccer

Valencia boys soccer continues its historic run in the CIF Division 4 State Regionals semifinal round, the deepest playoff run in the school’s history.

Today the Vikings host Fremont in the 2 vs 3 match in the biggest game of the season for Valencia.

In this tournament of champions, Valencia has already knocked off the Divison 4 LA-City champion, and now set their sights on defeating the LA-City Division 2 champion Fremont.

The Pathfinders come in to the game with a 73-17 goals scored/goals against ratio and are riding a 6-game winning streak.

The Vikings have an almost identical ratio at 74-14. The Semifinal kicks off at 4 pm.

Santa Clarita High School Baseball

Michael Rosati took home player of the game honors for West Ranch (4-1) yesterday in the Wildcats third straight Easton Tournament win, 6-1 over Burbank.

Rosati did a bit of everything. As the starting pitcher, the senior went 5 innings for the Cats allowing five hits and just one run, and helped his own cause on offense with a 2 for 3 day hitting the ball with one run and an RBI.

Up next for West Ranch is the Easton Tournament Championship against El Camino Real tonight at 6.

Infielder Chris Mueller picked up the player of the game nod for Valencia in their 10-2 Easton Tourney victory over Bishop Alemany. Mueller had two doubles and knocked in a run for the Vikings, who improved to 3-2.

Tony Jacob Jr threw a complete game shutout for Saugus (3-2) and the Centurions dominated Malibu in a 12-0 blanking to finish out their Easton Tournament on a high note.

Canyon (4-1) completed a strong SoCal Invitational Wednesday with a 7-3 victory over Venice High School.

Golden Valley (1-4) completed the banner day for the Foothill League by grabbing its first win of the season, 8-4 over Verdugo Hills. Michael Stephan paced the Grizzlies offense with two doubles and an RBI.

One game on the slate for Thursday, the Trinity Knights look for their first win against Santa Clarita’s own Albert Einstein Academy. First pitch is at 4.

Santa Clarita High School Softball

Canyon (6-1) swept Burroughs 4-1 and 5-4 on the road yesterday. The Cowboys now have a week off before hosting Palmdale.

Today’s non-league softball schedule:

Gahr vs Saugus

El Camino Real vs Hart

North vs Valencia

COC Baseball

The Canyons Cougars head to Citrus College today for Game 2 of a three game Western State Conference series. Jake Spurlin at the Cougars hit the field for first pitch at 1:25 pm.

Los Angeles Lakers

Kobe Bryant will face LeBron James for the final time in his career, as the Cleveland Cavaliers meet the Lakers at Staples Center tonight.

It hasn’t gone well for the Black Mamba against King James in their careers. Kobe is just 6-15 against LeBron, and the two were never able to match up in the NBA Finals (the only way to play in the playoffs since each player has spent his career in opposite conferences.

Though both players will agree they are enough years apart to not consider each other a rival, it should still be a special night as they will assuredly go at each other in 1v1 situations a possession or two.

Tip-off from Staples is at 7:30.
