Santa Clarita High School Soccer
Patrick Miller scored the game-winner for Valencia (23-3-2) Saturday afternoon in the 71st minute to capture the first regional championship in Foothill League history.
The Vikings 2-1 victory over Division IV No. 1 Godinez capped off the deepest playoff run in league history and added the latest banner to the Valencia athletic department.
Santa Clarita High School Basketball
The 2015/16 Santa Clarita high school basketball season officially ended Saturday night. Both the Canyon girls and Hart boys fell in the narrowest of ways, games that came down to the final minute of play.
Hart (23-9) traded baskets with Ayala throughout the second half but couldn’t make the defensive play when it needed to in the 76-74 Division 3 State 2nd round playoff loss.
Chad Donohoe, much like he’s done all season, carried the offensive load for the Indians to the tun of a game-high 28 points (8 3-pointers). Hart will have a difficult time replacing the production of the likely Foothill League MVP, but the Indians return a junior-heavy team and appear primed for another deep playoff run in 2017.
Lakeside’s Marissa Williams hit the go-ahead three with just under ten seconds to play to knock the Division 2AA runner up Canyon (25-8) out of the Division 3 State Tournament on its own home court, 47-45 Saturday.
It was a rough night offensively all around, but one late defensive miscue by Jessica Haayer’s girls was enough to be the downfall. The good news is Canyon leading scorer Talia Taufaasau (11 points) and the rest of the Cowboys starting five return to the team next season (amid high expectations).

Hart (4-3) scored two runs in the top of the 7th inning to defeat Santiago on the road, 3-1 Saturday. Senior Jake Lewis went 2 for 3 with an RBI triple.
Dos Pueblos dropped Canyon to 4-3 on the season. The Cowboys had five unanswered runs scored on them after going up 1-0 in the top of the 3rd inning.
Timmy Josten kept West Ranch (5-3) in the game against Oaks Christian going the distance and allowing two runs, but the Wildcats managed just three hits at Oaks Christian, Saturday. The Lions’ two runs in the 6th inning proved to be the difference.
Saugus (5-2) swept a 2-game series against Thousand Oaks over the weekend. Freshman Brandyn Cruz picked up his first career win in the first game, a 2-0 Cents win.
Game 2 was a bit more exciting. Saugus led 7-0 in the top of the 7th before coughing up seven runs, only to knock in the walk-off run in the bottom of the inning for an 8-7 thriller.
Santa Clarita High School Softball
Saugus (6-3) had a solid Tournament of Champions over the weekend going 3-2 with wins over California (5-2), Roosevelt (4-0) and South Hills (3-0) before being shutout by Norco 10-0 to eliminate the Centurions.
After starting the season hot at 5-0, Valencia (7-4) has come crashing back to earth with just two wins in its last six games. The Vikings did not fare well on their Tournament of Champions schedule over the weekend going 2-3 O’Connor and Foothill.
COC Baseball
Three Cougars homered in the rubber match of the opening conference series against Citrus College to move Canyons to 12-3. Justin Dehn pitched six innings allowing one run on six hits in the 12-1 victory.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers enter the third week of 2016 Spring Training by welcoming back Justin Turner on to the field. The third baseman and former utility player will debut today against Milwaukee after months of offseason rehab work on his surgically-repaired knee.
Los Angeles plays the Milwaukee Brewers in today’s Cactus League matchup. First pitch coming at 1:05 PM.
