Saugus Girls Cross-Country Finishes Third At State Meet

The Saugus girls cross-country team came home from the CIF State Championships with another addition to their trophy case, a third-place finish in Division 1.

The girls finished the race with a combined time of 1:32:37, a little more than 2 minutes behind the second-place finishers, Great Oak High School.

Sophomore Isabella Duarte had the team’s best finish at 18 minutes 6.7 seconds, while senior teammate Hailey Rutter was right on her heels with an 18 minute 7.7 seconds race.

While Saugus technically had a longer combined race time than fourth place Canyon Crest by 37 seconds, Saugus maintained a much tighter spread of times, which contributed to their higher overall score.

The Saugus girls cross-country team has won the state championship nine times, most recently in 2015.

The placement at state comes weeks after the Saugus High shooting, where two of the students’ classmates died after being shot in the quad.
