Valencia Forces Shutout In Dominant Win Over Golden Valley

Valencia football dominated from start to finish in their matchup at home against the Golden Valley Grizzlies Friday night, as they forced a shutout for a 34-0 win.

The Golden Valley offense couldn’t get anything going in the first half, while the Vikings orchestrated multiple scoring drives to put up a big lead early. On their first offensive possession, the Vikings marched 70 yards down the field for their first score on a 15-yard Jake Santos carry up the middle.

But the Valencia really exploded in the second quarter.

Valencia put together a second methodical drive down the field capped off by a Mitchell Torres three-yard carry to make it 14-0 with 10:45 in the second quarter.

After trading a few possessions, Valencia quarterback Ryan Morrison completed back-to-back passes to wide receiver Mitchell Torres for 35 yards and 22 yards, respectively, and the score.

“I just would like to take advantage of my opportunities,” said Torres. “We have a bunch of great receivers and when a play is called to me I would like to think I’d rise up to that occasion and hopefully I come down with the catch.”

A blocked PAT later it was 20-0 with 4:01 to play in the first half, but things got worse for the Grizzlies before the half was over.

On the ensuing drive, the Grizzlies fumbled on their own 17-yard line and the ball was scooped up by Valencia defender Dean Miller who took it in for the score, 28-0 with 3:46 in the second quarter.

Miller was all over the field Friday night, with a fumble recovery for a touchdown and multiple sacks, but didn’t take much credit for himself after the game. “The defensive line was living in the backfield, it was a great team win,” said Miller. “We were just playing nasty, getting down in there, playing physical, getting the hands on them and just doing our jobs.”

Golden Valley had a chance to score late in the first half, but failed to convert from the Vikings seven-yard line, the closest they would get to the Valencia endzone all evening.

Things slowed down in the second half, as Valencia found the endzone just once more on a 66-yard drive late in the third quarter, finished off by a one-yard Nick Pham rushing touchdown for the game’s final score, 34-0.

Valencia has found their groove after a three game stumble in non-conference play, rebounding with three straight wins to open up Foothill League play and outscoring opponents 94-34 during this winning streak. Not to mention, they’ve won 40 league games in a row.

“I think this is a really tight group, and adversity earlier in the year really brought us closer together,” said Torres. “This week we came out firing, so it’s been a good couple weeks out here.”

Valencia will look to keep their momentum going next week on the road against Saugus, while Golden Valley returns home for a matchup with Canyon.
