Weekly Recap Of 6 Santa Clarita Players In The MLB

Tommy Milone (Saugus ‘05) was called up to the Big Leagues this week, joining Trevor Bauer (Hart ‘08), Pat Valaika (Hart ‘10), Tyler Glasnow (Hart ‘11), Keston Hiura (Valencia ‘14), and Scott Barlow (Golden Valley ‘11) as the six Santa Clarita natives now playing in the MLB.

Bauer made his second start of the season for the Los Angeles Dodgers Wednesday afternoon in Oakland. He was dominant once again. In 6.2 innings pitched, Bauer allowed six base runners, 3 hits, 2 hit by pitches, and 1 walk, and gave up two earned runs. He was replaced by Corey Knebel in the seventh inning with the Dodgers leading 3-2. The A’s tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning and went on to win the game 4-3 in extra innings, handing the Dodgers their second loss of the season.

Bauer displayed his dominance in the third inning when he put down all three A’s batters he faced via strikeout. The first batter struck out on three pitches, and then the next two on four. All three hitters were sent back to the dugout on Bauer’s knuckle curveball. In addition to those three strikeouts, Bauer added seven more, bringing his game total up to 10 for the second time in as many games. This season Bauer is picking a new local charity each month for his “K’s for a Cause” charity and is donating $1,000 for every strikeout he records. This month’s charity is “Think Together” and they’ve now raised $20,000 after just two Bauer starts. Bauer’s next scheduled start is Wednesday, where he will look to continue to raise money for “Think Together” and help the Dodgers get a win.

Bauer’s start did not come without controversy. The MLB has tried to crack down on pitchers using illegal foreign substances to better their pitching performance. It was reported that multiple baseballs were taken from the game and were sent to the MLB offices for further inspection. It was said that the balls had visible markings and felt sticky. Bauer, per usual, took to Twitter to express his feelings on the situation calling out the “desperate and misleading clickbait headlines from national gossip bloggers.” Manager Dave Roberts was not happy that his star pitcher was being singled out, as the MLB has been taking baseballs for testing all season.

Milone was called up to the Major Leagues by the Toronto Blue Jays this week. He made his first appearance of the season on Tuesday against the Texas Rangers in a 7-4 loss. Milone entered the game in the fourth inning after starting pitcher Tanner Roark gave up five runs in the first three innings. Milone came in and gave up one run in the next three innings and also struck out two batters. Milone pitched great on Saturday in a 15-1 blowout against the Los Angeles Angels. He pitched the last three innings of the game, giving up just one hit, no runs, and striking out six Angels batters.

Valaika made his first start of the season on Monday starting at first base, going 0-for-4 at the plate. On Tuesday, Valaika pinch ran in the eleventh inning, but did not record an at bat. He got the start at second base on Thursday and went 0-for-2 with a walk.

Glasnow made his second start of the season Tuesday against the Boston Red Sox. Once again, Glasnow was dominant on the mound. He pitched six innings and gave up just one earned run, while also striking out six batters. He will be making his next start on Monday, April 12.

Hiura started four games at first base this week for the Milwaukee Brewers. After going hitless in his first five games of the season, Hiura doubled in the third inning of Thursday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. On Saturday, Hiura had two hits, including a 414 foot homerun in the seventh inning that helped the Brewers put away the Cardinals.

Scott Barlow made three relief appearances for the Kansa City Royals this week. In total, Barlow pitched four innings, giving up just two hits and two walks. He did not allow a run and also struck out three batters. His best performance of the week came on Monday where he did not allow a baserunner in two innings of work and helped the Royals beat the Cleveland Indians 3-0.
