‘We Are Here For You:’ Saugus High Teacher Shares Message Of Hope To Students

An anonymous Saugus High School faculty member wrote an open letter to Saugus High students, encouraging “we are here for you.”

Dear Saugus High Students,

A few days ago, on my time out getting a few necessities and saw the signs “Saugus Strong”. Immediately I was taken back to that awful morning when your lives completely changed. I then began to think that just when you thought you were taking steps on the journey to your new normal, this craziness hit.

I felt this overwhelming need to tell you that we, as the adults in your life – while we don’t understand it all and are not nor will ever be in your shoes – we are here for you. And since those are words you have probably heard a thousand times but you are still not really sure what to do with them, here’s an attempt at explaining them.

We are here for you….

We know that it takes a long time to get used to a new normal. In the meantime, please know that we are not going to give up on trying to show you that we love you and we are taking this journey with you.

We are here for you…

We can’t do much when we hear you cry at night, or when you get an overwhelming feeling of anger or deep sadness. Or when you don’t want to come out of your room. Or when you don’t feel motivated to do anything at all. But we are willing to do whatever it takes to remind you that there is a future worth living for you. Even if it means just listening to you or being there in silence.

We are here for you…

It’s hard for us to tell whether you need privacy or you are isolating yourself and keeping yourself numb by immersing yourself in an activity that limits your contact with others. But know that our incessant asking of questions is our attempt at trying to stay connected to you. We love you and we don’t want you to do this alone. No one should.

We are here for you…

We may not be related to you, but as a community, we want to make sure that you are ok. We are going to do the best we can, with the information we have and with the resources we have. Until you tell us otherwise, or direct us in a different way to help you, we will continue to do what we know to do.

We are here for you…

The adults in your immediate life may not be in a place where they can get you the help that you need. Please know that many of us as adults have been in similar traumas (we will never dare to compare what you have gone through, but we do have an understanding of what it is) and are dedicated as private citizens partnering with organizations to get you the help that you need. Please know that we know what it’s like to not have had help accessible to us and we don’t want you to go through it. Please reach out to one of the many resources offered within our community.

We are here for you…

We may not be what you wanted. The normalcy of going to school, seeing your friends finishing the year that you started. Prom, sports, the arts, all the things you enjoy doing. The freedom of being outside. The one thing we have been drilling into you since you were in Kindergarten – graduation (for those of you that are seniors). But we are doing our best to protect you and keep you safe. And we are more than willing to take the time to listen, explain and work together to make the best of our current situations.

We are here for you…

We want to love you, but we may be doing it wrong. Please tell us how you would know that you are loved by us. Sometimes we love others how we would like to be loved but we want to take it a step further and love you how YOU want to be loved. Be specific, we WANT to ge it right and even if it changes from day to day we want to know…and do it.

We are here for you.

  1. Our granddaughter is a junior at Saugus High. Thank you so much for reaching out to all of the Saugus students. It is important that they know how much their teachers care. They need the support and understanding of all of us; family, friends, and teachers. As a retired teacher, I am also thinking of all of you. Thank you for all you do.

  2. Thank you for sending your message of hope. I’m an alumni of Saugus High. I’m proud that Saugus High still has great teachers.
