The Elsmere Fire that erupted Monday, which prompted evacuations in Newhall, is now 60 percent contained, officials said.
The brush fire, dubbed the Elsmere Fire, which was first reported Monday at around 1:30 p.m. near Newhall Avenue and Sierra Highway, is now 60 percent contained and has scorched 160 acres as of Wednesday morning, said Franklin Lopez, spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Due to the rapid rate of spread firefighters quickly requested the brush response be upgraded to a third alarm response, according to officials.
The additional units were requested to assist in the fire fight as well as provide structure protection to the surrounding homes and businesses.
At the peak of the Elsmere Fire, more than 200 firefighters from three agencies operated in unified command, according to Fire officials.
The Elsmere Fire slowed traffic across the Santa Clarita Valley Monday, closing the 14 Freeway in both directions. Most lanes of the 14 Freeway were able to reopen by Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
No injuries or homes were lost as a result of the blaze, according to Fire officials.
