Lake Fire Update: Fire In Lake Hughes Reaches 12 Percent Containment, Destroys Five Structures

The Lake Fire in Lake Hughes has reached 12 percent containment Friday, burning over 11,600 acres two days after breaking out, officials said.

UPDATE (5:30 p.m.): New evacuation orders have been issued for the Lake Fire, according to a tweet from the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station.

UPDATE (3 p.m.): Those reporting a plume of smoke north of Santa Clarita are seeing a flare-up of the Lake Fire.

The blaze is moving north toward the area of Fairmont in the Antelope Valley fueled by triple-digit temperatures.

The brush fire, dubbed the Lake Fire, was first reported at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road in Lake Hughes just north of Santa Clarita, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

As of 9.am. Friday, the Lake Fire is estimated to be 11,637 acres, with 12 percent containment, according to the Fire Department.

Over 5,400 structures are still threatened by the  Lake Fire, according to Fire officials.

Poor overnight humidity Thursday night allowed the fire to remain active, primarily on the western flank, according to a Friday incident update.

By 11 a.m. Friday, “critical” fire conditions are expected to be in place, with triple-digit temperatures in the forecast.

“The area of the fire has not burned for decades,” said L.A. County Fire Department Chief Darryl Osby in a press conference on Thursday.

The Lake Fire has “extreme fire behavior” with witnesses reporting possible fire tornados in the area of the blaze, according to Fire officials.

The first report was that the fire had scorched 50 acres and within minutes the fire had exploded to around 450 acres sending smoke visible as far as Venice Beach.

By 8 p.m. Wednesday, the Lake Fire had erupted to approximately 10,000 acres prompting the evacuations of around 100 homes in the Lake Hughes area, according to Fire officials.

ANF Fire Chief Robert Garcia said the Lake Fire is burning near the area of the 2013 Powerhouse Fire, which burned over 30,000 acres.

The Lake Fire is burning on the opposite side of Lake Hughes Road from the previous Powerhouse Fire, according to Garcia.

“Many structures were saved from the actions of firefighters last night,” Osby said.

Damage assessment teams are working to determine a total number of buildings that were destroyed and to determine whether they were out-buildings or homes.

Around 1,000 firefighters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department the Angeles National Forestry Services, as well as the Los Angeles City Fire Department, Ventura County Fire Department, Glendale Fire Department, Anaheim Fire Department, Long Beach Fire Department and the Santa Monica Fire Department, have been working to contain the fire since it erupted Wednesday.

During the evening the fire laid down due to cloud coverage and light rain, according to Fire officials.
