UPDATE: Post Fire In Gorman 90 Percent Contained

Firefighters are continuing to increase containment on the Post Fire in Gorman, which has been burning since Saturday.

UPDATE (6/24 9:05 a.m.) Containment on the Post Fire has risen to 90 percent as of Monday morning. Firefighting agencies plan to continue monitoring hot spots. Evacuation orders and evacuation warnings have been lifted.

UPDATE (6/21 8:30 a.m.) Containment on the Post Fire has risen to 61 percent, remaining 15,690 acres in size as of Thursday morning, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD)

Higher temperatures and winds are expected Friday, and the weather is only expected to get hotter and windier over the weekend, potentially hampering firefighting efforts.

“Firefighters will continue to focus on protecting infrastructure and recreation areas. While several pockets of unburned fuel remain within interior portions of the burned area, the priority remains construction and reinforcing containment lines around the fire,” read a Friday morning update from the LACoFD.

UPDATE (6/20 11:35 a.m.)
Evacuation Orders have been lifted to an Evacuation Warning from the areas south of Pyramid Lake, west of the 5 Freeway, east of the L.A. County Line, and north of Templin Highway.

Residents are cautioned to remain ready for any changes.

“They’re going to do some operations today, boating the crews across the lake to get then access to a small piece of the fire that crossed the lake and making sure that that is finally secured up and mopped up,” said Landon Hack,  CAL FIRE Operations Section Chief.

Pyramid Lake remains closed to the public at this time.

UPDATE (6/20 10:37 a.m.) Firefighters continue making progress on the perimeter of the Post Fire in Gorman, which is currently at 47 percent containment as of Thursday morning, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The blaze remains 15,690 acres in size as of the last measurement.

Fire crews continue working throughout the fire to expand control lines around infrastructure and natural resources. Firefighters working at Pyramid Lake Dam are providing protection for critical infrastructures and watersheds as they work to secure other vital assets throughout other areas affected by the fire.

UPDATE (6/19 7:11 p.m.) Containment continues to increase on the Post Fire, growing to 43 percent as of Wednesday evening, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The blaze remains 15,690 acres in size as of the last measurement.

As the fire has not burned into any new areas, LACoFD officials say firefighting crews have been able to focus on interior areas of concern to prevent additional flare-ups and subdue isolated smoke or heat sources.

One single-family residence and one commercial property have been destroyed by the blaze, and another single-family residence was damaged. Another 50 single-family homes and 10 commercial structures remain threatened, according to the LACoFD.

“Other assets threatened include State and Federal REcreation sites, communication sites, United States Forest Service fire stations, oil pipelines, private camps and residences along Interstate 5 and multiple waterways in the area,” read the Wednesday afternoon report.

Temperatures are expected to climb into the 90s over the weekend, increasing the difficulty of firefighting efforts as personnel attempt to keep cool and fight flareups potentially worsened by the lowered humidity. According to the LACoFD, approximately 1,744 personnel from various agencies are assigned to the Post Fire.

UPDATE (6/19 12:35 p.m.) The Post Fire remains 31 percent contained and 15,690 acres in size, making it the largest active wildfire in the state as of Wednesday afternoon, according to Los Angeles County Fire Officials.

Steep terrain continues to cause access issues for firefighters, resulting in collaboration between the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Los Angeles Department of Water & Power to help ferry firefighters across Pyramid Lake.

UPDATE (6/18 5:36 p.m.) As of Tuesday afternoon, the Post Fire’s containment has risen to 31 percent. Size remains at 15,690 acres, according to CALFIRE.

CAL FIRE

UPDATE (6/18 3:23 p.m.) Several roadways have been closed due to the Post Fire, which is 15,690 acres in size and 24 percent contained as of Tuesday afternoon.

Road closures include:

  • Golden State Highway, northbound, closed north of Templin Highway.
  • Vista Del Lago Road, southbound, closed at the 5 Freeway exit to the Vista Del Lago Visitor Center for Pyramid Lake.
  • Castaic Lake Drive, eastbound, closed at Ridge Route Road (soft closure).

CAL FIRE officials state that the eastern edge of the fire is “looking really good,” with more focus being put on the southern and western sides.

“Everything is looking really good. However, the steep terrain and the fuel bed modeled in there are making it very difficult to get crews inserted. So we’re doign different tactics, bringing them in by boat off Pyramid Lake and also flying them in so that they can insert at the top and push down the side. We’re doing everything to make escape improbable for this fire,” said CAL FIRE Operations Section Chief Trainee Kristian Litz.

UPDATE (6/18 8:30 a.m.): The Post Fire is at 15,611 acres with 24 percent containment.

Important structures like power lines, dams, and oil pipelines are at risk, according to LACoFD.

“Firefighters will keep working through the night to strengthen fire lines, as the wind is expected to push the fire further south towards Pyramid Lake,” officials reported.

UPDATE (2:08 p.m.) The Evacuation Order area has been expanded to include the area south of Pyramid Lake, west of the 5 Freeway, east of the county line and north of Templin Highway, according to emergency management officials.
