A Canoga Park man has been identified as the person killed in an early Sunday crash in Newhall that sent his teenage passenger to the hospital.
Approximately 2:16 a.m. Sunday, the California Highway Patrol was notified of a traffic collision with injuries on the southbound 14 Freeway transfer to the southbound 5 Freeway in the Newhall Pass, according to the CHP incident report.
Preliminary investigation indicates that a Nissan Sentra occupied by an adult male driver and a juvenile passenger was traveling south on the connector from the 14 Freeway to the 5 Freeway when the accident occurred.
“Due to an unknown reason, the driver made an unsafe left turning movement and ultimately collided with multiple sand barrel attenuators,” according to CHP officials.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department declared Marco Antonio Vazquez, 33, of Canoga Park, dead at the scene.
Vazquez’s 17-year-old passenger, also a resident of Canoga Park, was extracted from the vehicle and transported to a local hospital with “minor to moderate” injuries.
Alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash, according to CHP.
