Fatal 5 Freeway Crash Victim Identified

The victim of a fatal 5 Freeway crash in Castaic has been identified, officials said.

Sergio Martinez, 35, of Grand Junction, Colorado, died at the scene of a 5 Freeway crash, according to Sarah Ardalani a spokesperson with the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

Around 5:40 a.m. Wednesday, firefighters received reports of a traffic collision involving fire and victims trapped on the northbound 5 Freeway south of Parker Road, said Michael Pittman, dispatch supervisor with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“When we got on scene, they confirmed a small pick-up truck was under the semi and was fully involved,” Pittman said.

The semi also caught fire as a result of the crash, according to officials.

The driver of the pickup truck was declared dead on arrival, Pittman said.

Due to the driver suffering from major burns, it is unclear if officials will be able to say if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, said Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol Newhall Office.

Firefighters were able to have both vehicle fires extinguished by 5:58 a.m., according to officials.

Officials with the California Highway Patrol were at the scene to investigate the crash.

“The pickup truck was lodged under the truck-tractor combination and burst into flames,” Greengard said. “The pickup truck had a solo driver, who sustained fatal injuries.”

The cause of the crash is still being investigated, according to officials.
