Caltrans To Implement Closures In Newhall Pass Dec. 1-5

Lanes Of Northbound 5 Freeway In Castaic To Be Closed Tonight

All but one lane of the northbound 5 Freeway will be closed tonight in the Castaic area for crews working to prevent further mudslides.

Between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. tonight, all but one lane on the northbound 5 Freeway will be closed near Templin Highway as crews work to shore up a three-day-old mudslide.

The lanes will be closed tonight starting three miles south of Templin Highway, or about seven miles north of the city of Santa Clarita.

I-5 normally has four northbound lanes but has been temporarily reduced to only two northbound lanes since Tuesday when a mudslide near Templin Highway blocked the right two lanes.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) plans to close one lane of the freeway, leaving just one lane open for northbound traffic.

Crews will place temporary concrete barriers, known as k-rail, at the mudslide. The k-rails will limit additional damage during the next series of storms expected this weekend.

The schedule is weather-permitting and subject to change due to operational issues.

Motorists should avoid non-essential travel in the area, according to Caltrans. If travel is necessary, drivers should allow extra travel time and expect delays.

Highway closures can be seen using Caltrans’ QuickMap service.

About Carl Goldman

Carl Goldman, along with his wife, Jeri repurchased KHTS AM-1220, Santa Clarita’s hometown station on October 24, 2003. They owned it from 1990-1998, and then sold it to Clear Channel Communication in 1998, buying it back from Clear Channel in 2003. Since then, they have rebuilt KHTS as a critical voice of the Valley. In 2015 the radio station moved to its new headquarters on Main Street in Old Town Newhall, in the original Newhall Hardware building. In 2018 an FM was added, 98.1, with its signal being simulcast with AM-1220. In January 2020, Carl and Jeri cruised on the Diamond Princess. Carl was one of the first Americans to come down with Covid-19. Months earlier he was impacted by Guillain Barre Syndrome as a result of a Shingles vaccine in September 2019. He is still in recovery from the vaccine.
