The office of the L.A. District Attorney, Jackie Lacey, warned local veterans about targeted scams as they approach Veterans Day.
As Veterans Day nears on November 11, the office of District Attorney Jackie Lacey issued a warning that scammers may be targeting veterans this year.
“Thieves have their sights on military veterans by trying to dupe them on the day that pays tribute to them,” reads the official statement from Lacey’s office. “Crooks try to take advantage of former servicemen and women on Veterans Day by touting special offers or dubious investment advice.”
In these targeted attacks, scammers may ask for personal information in order to update records, posing as representatives from a veterans administration. Scammers may also try to solicit money from veterans by offering to sell military records, which are available for free, according to Lacey’s office.
The district attorney suggests these tips in order to avoid being scammed:
- Do not pay money upfront without doing your due diligence.
- Never give out personal identifying information.
- Never send cash, wire money, pay in gift cards or use other untraceable methods of payment unless you are familiar with the charitable organization.
It is recommended to report scams and fraud to local police as well as local government, according to the Official Guide to Government Information and Services site.
