Cold Weather Alert Issued In Santa Clarita Valley For Tuesday Through Friday

Cold temperatures are expected in parts of Los Angeles County, with windchill temperatures reaching as low as 32 degrees in the Santa Clarita Valley.

On Sunday, the Los Angeles County Health Officer issued a Cold Weather Alert due to the National Weather Service’s forecast for low temperatures, affecting Lancaster, Mount Wilson, Pomona, Woodland Hills, and the Santa Clarita Valley.

The Santa Clarita Valley is set to be affected from Tuesday, Jan. 17, through Friday, Jan. 20.

“Children, the elderly, and people with disabilities or special medical needs are especially vulnerable during cold weather. Extra precaution should be taken to ensure they don’t get too cold when they are outside,” said Muntu Davis, MD, MPH, Los Angeles County Health Officer.

Residents are advised to take precautions to protect themselves from the cold by dressing in layers of warm clothing while outdoors, protecting their head, hands, and feet from the cold by wearing a hat, scarf, gloves, and socks, and checking on family members, friends, and neighbors with limited mobility and limited access to heat, such as seniors or those who are ill.

They also advise to take shelter during peak cold times and advise those who are seeking shelter to refer to The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority which provides a Winter Shelter Program for those in need.

Locations and transportation information are online or by calling the LA County Information line at 2-1-1 from any landline or cell phone.

The organization also provides information about the warning signs of hypothermia, including shivering, fatigue, loss of coordination, confusion, and disorientation.

They advise residents to only use approved heaters in homes and office buildings to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, including electric or natural gas heaters and fireplaces.

.Los Angeles County residents and business owners, including people with disabilities and others with access and functional needs may also call 2-1-1 or visit the website for emergency preparedness information and other referral services 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

For the deaf and hard of hearing, call the TDD line at 1-800-660-4026.
